After popping into various stores throughout Ann Arbor over the past two weeks, I finally found Ben & Jerry’s new cookie cores. I decided to start with the flavor about which I was least excited: Boom Chocolatta, featuring mocha and caramel ice creams, chocolate cookies, fudge flakes and a chocolate cookie core.
The mocha ice cream remains the highlight of this pint for me. It was excellent, mirroring the smooth finish of a cold-brewed cup of coffee. As for the chocolate cookie core, I am reminded of Kant’s remark about crooked timber, out of which nothing straight is ever built. Something just seemed off to me, for the core was way too bitter. Unlike an Oreo cookie, whose bitterness pairs exquisitely with the white creme filling, here the cookie core had an acrid, wholly unpalatable flavor.
